History and Explanation
The origin of Hockey is unclear. Versions of the sport, however, have been played in ancient Roman, Greek, Persian and Aztec civilizations. The most recognisable ancestral form of the sport is perhaps the medieval French stick game "hoquet", a name that bears a close resemblance to the English word "hockey".
Men's Hockey was first allowed in the Olympic Games in 1908 and became a permanent part of the programme in 1928. Women's Hockey however was not added to the Olympics till 1980.
Men's and Women's Hockey will make their debut in the 1998 XVI Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
